We had a “packed” room at the Golden Corral this past Tuesday for the RST General Meeting. Our speaker was Carl Foster, KB7AZ, and the topic was “Evaluating RF Exposure of Amateur Radio Stations.” (The presentation is available here: New Amateur RF Exposure Rules Rev D5X.pdf)
Carl has an impressive background in Amateur Radio, having been active on the air since 1970. He also is a member of, and contributes to several ham clubs, including RST. His numerous antennas for his current ham shack, allowed him lots of practice in doing the necessary RF exposure calculations!
Carl’s excellent presentation gives an overview of the current exposure rules, reviews the definitions required to understand the rules, and walks through the analysis process. His message was “Don’t Panic!” regarding creating the necessary exposure evaluation. The ARRL Calculator is much improved, and there are members of RST that are willing to help. (The Radio Society of Great Britain also has a helpful calculator: RSGB EMC Calculator.)
Carl held the attention of everyone, and handled several questions at the end. A vigorous round of applause expressed our appreciation for this well received education. We managed to leave the Golden Corral barely before closing.
Thanks very much Carl!
