September Meeting Update:

Jim Fisher
Technical Communications Manager, COML | K7ADW
Pima County Office of Emergency Management (OEM)

The Radio Society of Tucson is pleased to welcome Jim Fisher, from the Pima County Office of Emergency Management, as the featured speaker at our September 8 meeting. Jim will provide an overview of OEM, its organization, and responsibilities in the County. He will also present “OEM Comm”, the amateur radio group sponsored by OEM, it’s organization and role in supporting Pima County during emergencies, training exercises, and community events. OEM Comm is made up of registered Pima County volunteers who provide amateur radio and other communications support when requested by the Office of Emergency Management. Jim will also discuss the organization’s Base, Home Stations, Hospital, and Mobile Teams, along with the communications infrastructure and radio systems that help maintain emergency communications capability throughout Pima County and the surrounding region.

His presentation will also present information about upcoming public events in which OEM Comm will be participating and explain how these activities provide important opportunities for communications training and operational readiness. Because major emergencies occur infrequently, public service events give OEM Comm volunteers the opportunity to practice field deployment, message handling, radio operations, interoperability, and support of participants who may require medical or emergency assistance. This will be an excellent opportunity for RST members to learn how amateur radio contributes to Pima County’s emergency preparedness and public-service mission, as well as to hear about upcoming opportunities to see OEM Comm in action.
