This event will test your grit by setting your equipment up in field conditions with possible colder conditions. It will force us to be innovative with the equipment we choose and the use of only emergency power. Learning to operate multiple stations in proximity with multiple antennas all set up in a predefined area set by the Winter Field Day Association (WFDA). It gets us ready to communicate using HF, VHF and UHF in all transmission modes & bands adapting as required by conditions. Winter Field Day simulates a true emergency and challenges us to meet the moment.

  • Operate 100% on alternative power
  • Operate away from home
  • Deploy and make at least one contact on multiple antennas
  • Make an FM satellite contact
  • Make a SSB or CW satellite contact
  • Send and receive at least one Winlink email
  • Copy the WFDA Special Bulletin
  • Make three contacts on at least twelve different bands
  • Make three contacts on at least six different bands
  • Use multiple modes such as SSB, CW, AM, Digital (keyboard to keyboard only)
  • Operate QRP (10W or less)
  • Operate six continuous hours during the event

We will be using Bill Bennett’s wonderful Scheduling Software for ease of sign up. Within the scheduler you can choose your date/s of operation, your mode of operation and sign up for any increment of time of your choosing. The scheduler will remain open for the duration of this event, so you can drop-in and find a time, day, mode to operate from. Using this method will help the organizers ensure that we have someone operating all seven stations for the full 30-hour event.

It’s all about demonstrating to the public how amateur radio interfaces and provides emergency communications in conjunction with first responders in the Tucson metro. The WFD Committee is working to invite the area’s first responders to join us at this event so we can showcase how amateur radio interfaces with first responders in the event of an emergency. This event highlights how all of us make emergency communications work for the public.

There is no such thing as “I’m not needed” nonsense; everyone is welcome! Did you just get licensed? Maybe a complete novice? Perhaps a seasoned operator? First time at a contest? Experienced contester? Come, sharpen your skills or hone them with help from a friendly elmer. Come operate a rig, or maybe log for an operator.
